At the start of this month, I wrote a post outlining my writing goals. Now that March is over I’d like to examine how well I did considering that I was dealing with a wrist injury and to outline my April goals.
So, How’d I Do?
1.) My first priority was completing the first draft of my work in progress. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to given the time I had to take off to heal my wrist. I’m pleased to say that yesterday I finished handwriting the first draft. I still need to type up about 150 pages worth of handwriting and fill in a few details, but I was always planning on saving that for April.
2.) I needed to prepare materials for the Futurescapes Workshop I’ll be attending later this month. This involved preparing and submitting a 3000-word excerpt for critique, writing a query letter, and writing a synopsis. I submitted the excerpt early in the month and have a revised draft of the query letter that I’m happy to take for critique. I’ve written two drafts of the synopsis but will revise it a bit more now that I’ve finished the draft. So all in all, I’m on track in that department.
3.) I submitted the query letter for my previously completed manuscript for critique. This is something I had a lot of anxiety about, but now I’ve done it, and once I hear back from the critiquer, I’ll start querying that manuscript for real.
What’s in Store for April?
1.) I’ll do a quick revision of my newly completed manuscript. This will involve filling in some scenes I summarized, tying up a couple loose ends I know I forgot about, and filling in places where I got lazy and said [describe], [research], and [what’s this character’s name]. Once I’ve completed a quick revision, I’ll send the draft to my critique group and a couple alpha readers.
2.) I’ll be attending the Futurescapes Workshop in Utah April 16th-18th. Ahead of that, I need to read and critique my fellow writers’ work and finalize my query and synopsis. The first couple weeks of April will be mostly focused on that.
3.) Band business. My band is prepping to run a second Kickstarter and to release our third CD, so I’ll have my hands full writing the copy for the Kickstarter project and putting together schedules. This will be fun and involve a lot of spreadsheets.
4.) I’m going home to Maine after Futurescapes, which is bitter-sweet. I’m excited to see my family and friends, to cuddle my dogs, to smell the Maine air, and play music with the band, but I’ll be leaving my Person in Australia. At the very least, it’ll be three months before I see him again; at the most, six months. I can’t say I’m looking forward to that.
Thank you for reading!
